On May 7, 2005, a public vote was passed for the formation of an
Emergency Services District (ESD) for the Georgetown Fire Protection
District. An ESD is a geographical area, supported by taxes, to
provide emergency services within the area. The ESD is governed
by a county appointed commission.
Emergency Service Districts are created to allow for improvements
in rural fire protection areas. They are intended to build a partnership
with municipalities ensuring adequate service delivery is provided.
There are currently eight ESD’s in Williamson County, Jollyville,
Sam Bass, Hutto, Liberty Hill, Jarrell, Florence, Georgetown and
Coupland.
For many years the City of Georgetown has provided fire protection in the county through a Rural Fire Protection Agreement, for an annual fee. The costs for such services far exceed the contracted fee amount. An Emergency Service District allows for continued service of a rural fire protection area that has been covered by Georgetown for the last half century.
The ESD will assist the various municipalities with rapid population growth in their area, ensuring service coverage requirements are met now and into the future! |
